The tour begins at the Soup Company in Vík í Mýrdal, where you will find our experienced glacier guide and a modified super-jeep at our meeting point. At the beginning of the tour your guide will talk you through your upcoming adventure before you climb aboard an off-road monster truck that will navigate you through rough, frozen terrain towards the edges of the legendary Katla Volcano and the massive icecap which resides above it.

As you absorb the sweeping views of the mountains, glaciers and black volcanic deserts of the Mýrdalssandur flood plains, your guide will share with you the fascinating stories, tales and extraordinary geology that are connected to this beautiful area in the South of Iceland.

After the adventurous drive up to the highlands, you will get off the Super Jeep near the edge of the glacier. You will be given a helmet with a headlamp and crampons to wear whilst hiking. Your qualified glacier guide will inform you on how to use the gear and how to stay safe and secure during this adventure that takes us through multiple caves in the volcanic glacier outlets of Mýrdalsjökull glacier that is inaccessible for the typical tourist.

Katla is a name that will put shivers down any Icelanders spine. She is one of Iceland’s most feared and devastating volcanoes. Having been dormant for over 100 years to this day, we want to take you up to her roots for an unforgettable adventure, playing in the fire and ice and seeing the picturesque landscapes that have been formed and shaped by the might and power from the previous Katla eruptions.

This tour is for travellers who want to experience something extraordinary and truly unique. If you want to venture off the beaten path and away from the crowds Katla Volcano Ice Cave is the right tour for you!

Good to know

• Jeans are not recommended for glacier activities. Once it gets wet, it takes a long time to dry, leaving you cold.
• Ice caves are a dynamic ever-changing natural phenomenon. Each year new unique caves are formed in different areas of the glacier. The photos on our website and social medias are from this winter season, but the ice cave we visit might have changed due to the dynamic nature of these formations.

What To Bring

Navigate

Map

Weather in Iceland is very unpredictable. For tours during winter: warm clothing as first layer, waterproof outdoor jacket and pants, hiking boots with high ankle protection, a hat and gloves are ideal. For tours during summer, bringing a light rain jacket and pants is in most cases enough protection. Icelanders often say, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes”. Jeans are not recommended for outdoor trips as they become very heavy and cold when they get wet.

We encourage bringing hiking boots for glacier tours. They have to have hard on the sole and be tight around the ankle. You have the option to rent hiking boots for our Katla Ice Cave Tour during the booking process for 1500isk per pair.

Our tours are considered to be safe for anyone in good physical condition. You have to be able to walk for about an hour up and down on slopes and uneven surface. Longer tours will be more challenging in endurance for some areas of the glacier. We also recommend you remember that we offer all the safety equipment necessary and you will be hiking with a professional and certified glacier guide. If you have specific questions regarding one of our glacier tours, feel free to email us.

This is a personal choice. We have had pregnant women on our glacier hikes and we always recommend you read the description of the activity to get a better idea. In any case, feel free to contact our Service Team for further questions and concerns.

Wind and rain are common in Iceland, in addition to snow in the winter, but we do not let challenging weather stop us from going out and enjoy nature. All we need to do is choose our clothing wisely, which is why we recommend wearing waterproof jacket and pants as the second layer. Of course, safety is our #1 priority, in case of extreme weather or road conditions, we will cancel our tours and do our best to reschedule your booking at a further date or provide a full refund.
